This week, we will discuss story characters and traits using text evidence.
The Essential Question for the week is: ?
Phonics Skills: suffixes er and est
Grammar:
All students have been assigned their new AR goals for the last 9 weeks of school. The students met one-on-one with me to discuss their current reading level. Each child was responsible for setting their personal goal. Please check with your child to ensure they are following through. Every child should be taking at least 1 test per week. Remember, students must read books on their reading level!
Spelling: New spelling words have been placed on the spelling words web page.
New for the remainder of the year: Your child will be required to copy dictated sentences as part of their spelling test. Students had some difficulty with the dictated sentences. This was to be expected for their first attempt. You may want to practice this at home. Remind them to use a capital letter at the beginning of the sentence and the correct punctuation at the end of the sentence. They should be able to spell all words in the dictated sentence as these have been covered this year.
SIGHT WORDS:
Students who know fewer than 180 sight words are still receiving their lists each week. Remember that your child's list is unique to them. In order for them to grow as a reader, it is very important that they learn these words. Please keep practicing at home.
Starfall.com can be used to practice sight words and specific skills. If your child knows fewer than 100 sight words, they should be going on Starfall at least 3 times a week.
MATH:
Chapter 12 focuses on 2-dimensional shapes (sorting by vertices, sides, open vs. closed shapes) and what shapes can be combined to make new shapes.
Science: Students will be able to identify what a seed needs in order to grow; write an EARTH DAY poem; plan and conduct an investigation on a plant's root and stem system
